2007 State Meet (2A & 3A) Recap

Finally, a state champion.
Sweetwater's Skye Green has always been close to gold but Dallas Madison's Shawnbrey McNeil has always been a stumbling block. Green placed second McNeil their sophomore year, and placed third last year. Finally, Green was able to do what he has not been able to do the last two years. Defeat McNeil and win the 100 meter title. "It feels good. It's the best thing that has happen in my life. I just want to thank God" stated Green about winning the 100 and beating his nemesis McNeil. Green went through extra preparation by purchasing a 40lb weight suit. He practiced in it leading up to the state meet. There was some separation between the two on the track. Green was in lane 4 while McNeil was in lane 7. When ask did he see McNeil during the race Green replied, "No, I couldn't see him. I was just looking forward and staying focus. I didn't want to look around and give him an edge." McNeil was not happy about the race. "I got a bad start, but he did a good job" said McNeil.

A Taste of All Three
Giddings' senior Bill Lawhorn enter the 3A state meet in the 100, 200 and 400. He was able to snag a gold, silver and bronze in his events. He first got his first medal in the 100 where he placed 3rd behind Green and McNeil. In his signature event, the 400, he got out to a fast start and never looked back. Running in lane 2, Lawhorn was able to catch the stagger midway through the race. The race was pretty much over at the 300 mark. It appeared that Lawton had slowed up at the tape wanting to preserve some energy for the 200. Lawhorn won the race in a time of 47.19. In his final event, the 200, Lawhorn used a last second surge to place second behind Abilene Wylie's Gary Edwards
